Seed & Sprout Beginnings with Sophie Kovic
Every year, an astonishing eight million tonnes of plastic find their way into our oceans, wreaking havoc on marine life and causing significant harm to the environment. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, one passionate woman from Byron Bay, Australia, has taken it upon herself to introduce plastic-free living into people’s lives through her company Seed & Sprout.
Thus, Sophie Kovic embarked on her mission by establishing Seed & Sprout, a remarkable online store dedicated to offering eco-friendly alternatives. Their extensive range of plastic-free products includes innovative solutions like stainless steel lunch boxes and silicone food covers, designed to make sustainable living practical and accessible.

The Gap Bridged by Sophie Kovic
According to Sophie Kovic, there is often a gap between the desire to lead a more sustainable lifestyle and the actual implementation of it. Seed & Sprout aims to bridge that gap by providing practical solutions to everyday challenges. Sophie’s journey toward creating this business aligns with her personal quest to adopt a greener lifestyle.
“The inspiration behind Seed & Sprout came when my son started school, and his lunch box had a strict no-plastic policy. This led me down a rabbit hole of searching for suitable non-plastic alternatives, which turned out to be an exhausting process,” explains Sophie.
To ensure the viability of her products before launching them on a larger scale, Sophie wisely tested the market’s appetite. She created a lunch box that she loved and needed, but before introducing it to a wider audience, she wanted to ensure its appeal and market demand. Consequently, Sophie took her product to the United States and sold an impressive 3,000 lunchboxes on Amazon in just four months.
In Australia, Sophie further validated her concept by launching a Kickstarter campaign. Within a mere 48 hours, the campaign achieved its full funding goal, confirming the strong interest and support for her plastic-free products.
Issues Along The Way
Despite experiencing rapid growth, Sophie Kovic faced challenges along the way, including cash flow issues and complications with overseas manufacturers. Recounting one such incident, she shares, “Recently, one of our Chinese manufacturers individually wrapped each straw in a poly bag, which was truly concerning. As a result, we now ensure that any new manufacturing partners sign an agreement stating they will not use plastic packaging in the supply chain.”
Social Media Marketing
One of Sophie Kovic’s keys to success lies in building a devoted community of followers through social media engagement. By utilizing platforms like Instagram Live, she maintains an open line of communication with customers, keeping them informed and involved. Sophie firmly believes that in today’s world, people seek deeper connections with brands and long to trust individuals rather than faceless corporations.
“I actively involve our customers in decision-making processes. I show them samples and ask for their preferences on colors and designs. I think they genuinely appreciate being a part of the journey,” adds Sophie.
Through her tireless efforts and dedication, Sophie Kovic and Seed & Sprout have become champions of the plastic-free movement, empowering individuals to make sustainable choices and contributing to a cleaner, healthier planet.
